Getting Stuck In To Permeability

An enormous range of adhesives, sealants and mastics are in widespread daily use in all corners of the globe.  One of the most critical factors is their ability to prevent (or sometimes allow) the ingress or exit of water, hydrocarbons (usually in vapour form) or other gases.  This requires a measurement of the permeability of the adhesive or mastic – which could be non-silicon sealants, PVA, contact adhesives, specialist tapes, acetoxy, neutral silicone or expanding PU foams and gap filling adhesives.

No matter how well they are made or what precautions you take, all adhesives sealants and gaskets, allow liquids and/or greases through - simply because their vapours can physically permeate through the materials from which they are made.  Some materials that you would expect to be good seals – such as cellulose, EVOH, PVOH, actually present almost no barrier to water as a vapour at all!

This permeability causes serious problems for an overwhelming number of processes, products and production lines. An absolute "cure" is impossible, but you can reduce the effect by enough to make it stop being a problem with surprisingly little effort. Versaperm's latest generation of Seal and O-Ring Permeability Testers can save the day, with a quick and easy way to test or QC products, samples and components with its fast and simple-to-use equipment.

The Versaperm Vapour Transmission meter range can take measurements on several items at the same time, sometimes giving a reading in just 30 minutes.  Accuracies are usually in the parts per million (PPM) range, with PPB precision in some cases.

Seals and enclosures can also be highly sensitive to changes in pressure, temperature and other conditions.  Worse still, manufacturing processes such as thermoforming can degrade the performance of materials to a quarter of their original value.  Testing is the only way to ensure that a seal is fit-for-purpose and that Quality Control is being maintained.
